Community Update 8/24/17

(Since this week started off pretty astronomical,
we figured we'd keep the trend going!
)

ON AUGUST 24TH, 2006...
......On August 24th, 2006 : The International Astronomical Union (IAU) defined the term "planet" for the first time and declared that Pluto was no longer the Solar System's ninth planet, demoting it to the status of a "dwarf planet." A group of 2,500 scientists at a meeting in Prague voted that Pluto would no longer be considered a planet in the scientific community. The scientists created a strict set of guidelines for classifying planets and Pluto did not meet the guidelines, the planet was reclassified as a dwarf planet. According to the new definition, there are currently eight planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) and four dwarf planets (Ceres, Pluto, Makemake and Eris) now known in the solar system.

Artist showing through September at Vista Clubhouse – Anna Mead
A native West Virginian, Anna Marie Mead has made Colorado home for over 40 years where she makes creating art part of her everyday life. As a professional artist, she has a studio in Denver’s Santa Fe Arts District. This studio is located at the BitFactory (#105), and here she has enjoyed creating as well as exhibiting her paintings in the gallery.

ON AUGUST 17TH, 1590...

Roanoke Colony is found deserted

It's a mystery that has intrigued Americans for centuries: What happened to the lost colonists of North Carolina's Roanoke Island? (See "America's Lost Colony."). The settlers, who arrived in 1587, disappeared in 1590, leaving behind only two clues: the words "Croatoan" carved into a fort's gatepost and "Cro" etched into a tree.

Nautilus travels under North Pole!

On August 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplishes the first undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. The world’s first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world. It then steamed on to Iceland, pioneering a new and shorter route from the Pacific to the Atlantic and Europe.

Open Space Updates:
Weed Spraying Notice
Weed spraying along Genesee Roads and open space will occur July 3 through July 28.
Genesee works to control its weed populations to prevent them from overrunning our native plants as well as to meet the State’s mandatory weed control laws. Please call the Open Space Manager if you have any questions.
Areas will be posted if they are located along hiking trails and a map will be posted in the Vista Clubhouse.

Lost “Community News” email?
Each Thursday the Foundation staff sends a newsletter about happenings in our community. The newsletters have become popular. However, some residents ask why they don’t receive them. Here are two possible reasons and a solution for each:
  1. The Foundation Office does not have your email address. This is easily solved by sending an email to frontdesk@geneseefoundation.org asking to be placed on the email list.
  2. If you have set up a “Promotions Tab” for Gmail then that’s where the Google robots place our newsletter, a place that is easily overlooked. This is also easily solved.Just click and drag the “Community News” from the Promotions list to the Priority tab. Subsequently, our newsletter will appear in your Priority inbox -- happy reading.
