Open Space Technician

Salary: $13/hr. - $17/hr.

General Purpose:

Genesee is a unique residential community located in a biologically diverse foothills ecosystem. The foothills climate zone is an ecological transition between the lower elevation plains and higher elevation mountain zones. Ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir forests dominate the landscape in Genesee, with juniper trees found at lower elevations and warmer south facing slopes. Shade-tolerant Douglas fir trees are located at higher elevations and north facing slopes. The transitional nature of the foothills ecosystem is a key factor contributing to its rich biological diversity. The Open Space department is responsible for maintaining 1,200 acres for the community. Wildlife, forestry and natural resources management are a top priority of Genesee Open Space. We are a pioneer member of the Firewise Community program. Starting and ending dates are flexible for the perspective candidate. These positions can last up to 7-9 months depending on management needs and funding.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date

  • Ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles in variable weather and road conditions

  • Ability or willingness to learn how to operate chainsaws. logging/forestry equipment, and perform strenuous outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions

  • Ability and willingness to work long hours with occasional evening and weekend duties (work based on a 40-hour work week)

  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team


  • Assist Open Space Manager in applying for and managing grant funds

  • Assist with noxious weed control

  • Help maintain Genesee’s Trail System

  • Endurance to hike on a regular basis in any weather

  • Ability to drive trucks, tractors and UTVs

  • Cruising and data collection for forest-wide inventory

  • Ability to use: hand tools, back pack sprayer, compass, inventory tools, etc.

  • Chainsaw operation - thinning, firewood, and defensible space work

  • Assisting with forest treatment layout - cruising, boundary delineation, and marking

  • Various GPS and GIS applications

  • Assisting with assessment and treatment of insect/disease projects

  • General labor - facility and equipment maintenance, minor construction projects, etc.

Working Conditions:

Material and equipment directly used: All hand and power tools, chainsaw, chemicals, pool equipment, tractor, crack filler. Working environment: Shop, all tools and business vehicle provided. Work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Work is hands on and involves heavy lifting and endurance. Work may involve lifting 50 (+/-) pounds, Must work July 4th, 2019.

Education + Experience:

  • Training and/or experience with ArcGIS and/or GPS systems is preferred

  • Ability to identify Colorado native and non-native plant species is preferred

  • Knowledge of restoration techniques, forest management, weed management, wildlife management, Firewise and fire mitigation

  • Experience doing natural resource surveys, data collection, reporting, monitoring, etc.

  • Experience in the utilization of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, e-mail, GPS and ArcGIS

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbal and written
