September happens to be National Preparedness Month. Right around the corner, National Fire Prevention Week starts October 7 and ends October 13th. This year's wildland fire season, especially in California, once again reminds us of the value in being proactive.

How can we prepare for fire disaster? A good starting point, is to obtain the Jefferson County Emergency Preparedness Guide, available at the foundation office. Disaster preparation and response is a partnership between you, local governments, and disaster-relief organizations. Please put aside some time to consider your home's exposure to fire risk, follow up with proper mitigation measures on your property, and create or update your family's disaster plan. Evaluate potential safety hazards such as chemicals, spontaneous combustion, or faulty wiring. Assembling a disaster supply kit, establishing evacuation routes out of your home, providing for protecting family pets, effective communication, and establishing checklists are just a few simple measures you can take.

You are encouraged to access geneseefoundation.org, or contact the foundation office for other helpful safety information.

Thank you,
