/ 2007 EROSION CONTROL

Soil erosion is the loss of soil material due to water runoff; it is a major environmental concern that isn’t well recognized.  Soil erosion occurs when the energy from rainfall or runoff is greater than the resistance of the soil particle.  Soil is carried away over time until it is able to withstand the force of the runoff, this usually occurs when bedrock is exposed.

Soil erosion reduces stream health by increasing sedimentation, contributes to plant loss by depleting nutrients and organic matter, and can damage roads and recreational trails.

In 2005, an environmental engineer was contracted to evaluate erosion areas within the Genesee community and create a Genesee Erosion Study.  After determining the source of erosion and how the local topography contributes to the movement of unstable soils, treatment solutions are identified for each erosion area.
