GENESEE'S PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ANCHOR POINT GROUP
The Genesee subdivision is located within Jefferson County's "red zone" because of the proximity of homes located in an area with a high risk for wildland fire. Genesee has been actively managing its open space since 1984 in partnership with the Colorado State Forest Service. After management plans provided by the Colorado State Forest Service were complete Genesee pursued a scientifically based analysis of its open space areas.
The Anchor Point Group was selected because of the expertise presented in forestry consulting and services related to the wildland urban interface. Hazard and risk assessments utilize GIS technology and fire behavior modeling, from these assessments mitigation recommendations specific to Genesee are provided. For more information on the Anchor Point Group please review their website at www.anchorpointgroup.com.
WILDFIRE HAZARD - VALUES OF RISK ANALYSIS
In 2001 with the assistance of a Federal Financial Grant, Genesee contracted with the Anchor Point Group to create a scientifically based analysis of the Wildfire-hazard risks within the community. From this analysis Genesee is able to make land management decisions, as well as deliver important information to fire personnel in the event of an unplanned ignition. The report combines extreme fire behavior and the values at risk (houses) to determine where management practices should be focused. From the analysis areas of concern are identified and recommendations given to help prioritize mitigation efforts.
HAZARD REDUCTION FOCUS AREA
The Hazard Reduction Focus Area analysis created by the Anchor point Group was done to prioritize mitigation measures on Genesee Open Space. The extreme and very high rated layers illustrated in the areas of concern figure from the Wildfire Hazard - Values at Risk are analyzed by fire behavior threat and structure density weighting. From this analysis areas are prioritized for mitigation efforts, some areas with extreme fire behavior threat and low proximity to houses may be rated with a lower priority for mitigation work than high fire behavior threat with close proximity to houses.
GENESEE EVACUATION PLAN STRATEGIC FUELS REDUCTION RECOMMENTATIONS
Protecting Genesee's primary ingress and egress route is crucial, in the Wildfire Hazard - Values at Risk analysis a pre-plan and fuel modification project is recommended. The Anchor Point Group surveyed Genesee roads to identify fuels modification projects that will help facilitate safe access in and out of the community. Prescription recommendations and priority designations have been identified for the locations described in the report.
